What You Need to Know About Tiger Woods’ Switch to TaylorMade
In round one of the Quicken Loans National, Tiger Woods surprised the golf world by breaking out the new TaylorMade Ardmore 3 putter—and he loved it.
Woods usually sports a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS putter, which has helped him win nearly all of his major titles. For the Quicken Loans National, though, he needed something new to help him get back his winning streak.
Let’s talk about his experience.
Woods’ goals with the TaylorMade golf club were to see his lines better and maintain the ping grip he was used to.
The official name of the new golf club is the TaylorMade TP Black Copper Ardmore 3 mallet. It seemed to work out well for Woods. In fact, he was so happy with the results of the TaylorMade golf club, he claimed, “I’m seeing the lines again, and I really like the swing of this putter.”
At the event, Woods had 26 putts on Friday, and 27 over each weekend day. It was a victorious weekend with him finishing the Quicken Loans National tied for fourth place. According to his website, he is now expected to hit number 67 in the Official World Golf Ranking—the highest he’s been for over three years.
While Woods tried many different TaylorMade golf clubs in the Bahamas, he liked how the Ardmore had grooves and more swing.
He mentioned that the Taylormade golf club had helped him achieve more than he had done in many years, which was an accomplishment of its own. He also liked the sleek look of the new putter.
Its plumber L-neck hosel resembles Woods’ Scotty Cameron, but the mallet-style design sets them apart. The mallet look has been gaining popularity in the PGA Tour in the last few years with other famous golfers such as Justin Thomas using similar setups.
According to Golfweek, the TaylorMade golf club has 12 degrees of toe hang, which gives strokes more arc and can help improve a golfer’s game. It also contains Pure Roll polymer with grooves, resulting in a better roll, and one sightline. These could have been the defining factors that helped boost Woods’ game.
In the past, Woods has been spotted with other golf clubs such as Nike. How will the TaylorMade golf club stack up in the future?
Woods hasn’t said he’s going to move completely away from his Scotty Cameron, but the fact that he’s trying out completely different golf clubs suggests that he is thinking about it.
During the Quicken Loans National, he said that he’s open to trying new golf clubs and figuring out what works while he improves his sightline.
Now, will he be using the new TaylorMade golf club at the Open Championship this week in Scotland? We will see, but it appears so, as a Tweet by the GC Tiger Tracker said that Woods is “very committed” to the new TaylorMade golf club.
